Fleet Vehicle Washing: The Complete Guide for UK Operators

The complete UK operator's guide to washing HGVs, buses and vans — chemicals, methods, frequency, winter prep and cost per vehicle.

Every operator knows a clean fleet matters. Fewer can say exactly why it matters, what it should cost per vehicle, or whether their wash routine is actually protecting the fleet or slowly damaging it. This guide covers the whole subject in one place: why fleets are washed, what traffic film is, which chemicals do what, how to wash efficiently, how often, what changes in winter, and how to set up a wash operation that doesn't waste money. It's written from eight-plus years supplying wash chemicals to UK transport fleets — the same products now used on more than 20,000 vehicles every week.

Why fleet washing is an operational task, not a cosmetic one

Your trucks are your advertising. A liveried HGV is seen by thousands of people a day. A filthy one tells every customer, and every potential recruit, something you didn't intend to say. Major shippers notice the condition of the vehicles arriving at their RDCs.

Dirt hides defects. Daily walkaround checks and MOT preparation depend on being able to see the vehicle: lamp lenses, reflectors, number plates, tyre condition, chassis cracks, leaks. DVSA expects number plates and lights to be visible and working — grime that obscures them is a prohibitable defect on the road. A washed vehicle is an inspectable vehicle.

Corrosion is the long game. Road salt is applied to UK roads all winter, and salt-laden film left on a chassis eats it. Regular washing — especially through winter — is one of the cheapest anti-corrosion measures available.

Resale value. Paint condition is among the first things a used-vehicle buyer assesses. A fleet washed correctly for five years sells for visibly more than one washed rarely or washed with harsh chemistry.

Know your enemy: traffic film

The grey layer that dulls a working vehicle isn't ordinary dirt. Traffic film is a bonded blend of diesel soot, oxidised oil, brake dust, rubber particulates and road salts, compacted onto the surface by airflow at speed. It bonds electrostatically to paint, which is why hosing it — even with a powerful pressure washer — leaves it largely in place. Removing it chemically is the job of traffic film remover (TFR), the workhorse chemical of every fleet wash operation. The fleet wash chemical set

A working fleet needs surprisingly few chemicals, bought in the right concentrations:

  • Traffic film remover — the primary wash detergent, applied diluted through a pressure washer, sprayer or brush system. Concentrate in 20L, 200L or 1000L IBC sizes; dilution set to soiling level.
  • Screenwash — a safety consumable, not an accessory. An HGV windscreen collects spray, film and salt continuously, and running out mid-route in January is both dangerous and illegal to ignore. Fleets buy concentrate or ready-mixed screenwash by the 200L drum or 1000L IBC and decant to vehicles — winter blends protect to -15°C and beyond.
  • Sanitiser — cab touchpoints, welfare areas and food-adjacent bodywork. Post-2020 this became a standing line on most fleet chemical orders.
  • Dispensing kit — IBC gravity feed kits, drum pumps and syphon pumps that turn a 1000L IBC into a practical daily filling station instead of a storage problem. (See accessories.)

Washing methods, compared

Pressure washer + TFR (the standard). Pre-rinse, apply diluted TFR bottom-up, allow short dwell — never letting it dry — then rinse top-down. Fast, effective, low equipment cost. Hot water improves results noticeably.

Brush wash. A wash brush fed with TFR solution adds agitation, which lets you run weaker dilutions and gets the best finish on liveried curtains and cabs. Slower, more labour.

Drive-through / rollover systems. Right for high-throughput depots; chemical choice still matters because the machine doses whatever you put in it. Non-caustic TFR protects both the fleet and the machine's brushes and seals.

Contract washing. Mobile wash crews make sense for small fleets without drainage or space. If you outsource, it's still worth specifying the chemistry — you carry the paint damage, not the contractor.

Whatever the method: wash in shade where possible, keep chemical off hot panels, and rinse thoroughly.

Dilution: where the money is made or lost

Fleet wash chemicals are sold as concentrate, and the working cost is set by the dilution ratio, not the drum price. Two habits pay for themselves immediately:

  1. Measure, don't glug. A calibrated dosing pump, dilution sprayer or marked mixing vessel keeps every wash at the intended ratio. "A splash in a bucket" is how fleets end up using triple the chemical they need — or too little to work.
  2. Match ratio to soiling. Weekly-washed vehicles need a weaker mix than monthly-washed ones, and the concentrate is designed to be tuned: start weak on a regularly washed vehicle, step up only if film survives the rinse, then write the winning ratio on the wash bay wall so every operative mixes the same. Worked example, using deliberately conservative maths: a 1000L IBC of TFR concentrate costs £529.99. Even at a modest 1:10 working mix, that's 11,000 litres of ready-to-use wash solution; at a typical 20–40 litres of solution per HGV wash, one IBC covers hundreds of washes — a chemical cost measured in pennies-to-pounds per vehicle, falling further at lighter maintenance-wash dilutions. How often should a fleet be washed?

There's no single legal interval — the standard is that the vehicle must be safe, inspectable and presentable. In practice UK operators converge on:

  • Tractor units and rigids: weekly, or fortnightly on lighter duty cycles.
  • Trailers and curtains: fortnightly to monthly, weekly for high-visibility contract liveries.
  • Buses and coaches: exterior daily-to-weekly depending on route exposure; interiors daily.
  • Vans: weekly for customer-facing trades; fortnightly otherwise.
  • Winter: hold or increase frequency, not reduce it — this is when salt does its damage and when lights, plates and windscreens foul fastest.

The practical rule: wash before the film visibly builds. Little and often is cheaper per year than occasional recovery washes — lighter soiling means weaker dilutions, faster washes and no need for aggressive chemistry.

Winter: the season that tests every fleet

From October to March, three things change. Salt-laden spray coats vehicles within a day of gritting; wash frequency has to keep pace to protect the chassis and keep lights and plates legal. Screenwash consumption triples or more — a fleet that decants from a 1000L screenwash IBC never sends a driver out with a dry reservoir. And freeze protection becomes non-negotiable: summer-strength screenwash freezes in the reservoir and lines, exactly when the windscreen is at its dirtiest. Move the fleet onto a winter blend before the first frost — our extreme blend protects to -15°C — and brief drivers to top up as part of the walkaround.

Setting up a wash bay that works

You don't need much to run an efficient in-house wash operation: a hardstanding area with interceptor drainage (trade effluent must not enter surface water drains — check your water company's requirements), a pressure washer sized to the fleet, chemical storage that keeps drums bunded, labelled and off direct sunlight, dispensing pumps so concentrate is measured rather than poured, and COSHH basics — data sheets on file, gloves and eye protection at the point of use, and a written dilution card on the wall so every operative mixes the same wash. What's the single biggest mistake fleets make?
Washing too rarely, then compensating with over-strong chemical. It costs more per year and damages the fleet. The second biggest: unmeasured dilution.
Can I wash a fleet without a pressure washer?
Yes — brush washing with correctly diluted TFR works well; it's just slower. Most depots end up with both.
Is TFR safe on signwriting and wraps?
Non-caustic TFR at the recommended dilution, rinsed properly — yes. Caustic TFR degrades vinyl over time. More on that here.
