Traffic film is the grey, bonded layer of road grime that builds up on every working vehicle — a baked-on mix of diesel soot, oxidised oils, brake dust, rubber particles and road salts. Ordinary detergent won't shift it, and neither will water pressure alone. Traffic film remover (TFR) is a specialist detergent formulated to break the electrostatic bond between that film and the vehicle surface, so it rinses away with a pressure washer or brush wash. What "caustic" means in a TFR
Caustic TFRs get their cleaning power from sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) or similar strong alkalis. They are aggressive by design: high pH, fast-acting, and extremely effective at dissolving greasy, carbonised deposits. Non-caustic TFRs achieve their cleaning through blends of surfactants, water softeners and alkaline builders that stop short of caustic soda's harshness — a lower working pH that lifts traffic film without chemically attacking the surface underneath.
The case for caustic TFR
There's a reason caustic products have been around for decades. They cut through heavy, neglected soiling faster than anything else — a tipper that hasn't been washed all winter, chassis and underbody grime, or plant equipment caked in site mud and grease. They also tend to be cheap per litre, which looks good on a purchase order.
But that purchase-order saving is where the true cost hides.
The case against: what caustic does to your fleet
Caustic chemistry doesn't know when to stop cleaning. The same aggression that strips traffic film also, wash after wash:
- Dulls and fades paintwork — caustic residue attacks the clear coat, leaving panels chalky and oxidised months or years before their time.
- Stains and pits aluminium and polished alloys — caustic soda reacts with aluminium on contact. Wheels, fuel tanks, curtain-sider poles and catwalks are all at risk; one too-strong mix can permanently blacken polished alloy.
- Lifts vinyl signwriting and wraps — repeated caustic washing attacks the adhesive and the vinyl surface, so your livery peels and fades. For a fleet whose trucks are moving billboards, that's a real commercial cost.
- Degrades rubber seals and plastic trim over time.
- Raises handling risk — stronger COSHH controls, more serious splash injuries, and more care needed around drainage.
None of this shows up in week one. It shows up at year two or three, as a fleet that looks ten years old and a resale valuation to match.
The case for non-caustic TFR
Modern non-caustic formulations have closed most of the cleaning-power gap. A well-built non-caustic TFR at the right dilution will remove normal weekly traffic film completely — while being safe on paint, lacquer, alloys, aluminium, glass and signwriting. That's why the industry has steadily moved non-caustic for routine fleet washing:
- Wash as often as you like without cumulative damage — which matters, because frequent washing is what actually keeps a fleet looking professional.
- Safe on the expensive surfaces — wraps, polished tanks, alloys.
- Kinder to operators and to your effluent handling.
- Protects resale value — paint condition is one of the first things a used-truck buyer prices in.
The trade-off: on genuinely heavy, long-neglected soiling, a non-caustic product may need a stronger dilution, warmer water, or a second pass where a caustic product would burn through in one.
One honest clarification: "non-caustic" doesn't mean harmless. A quality non-caustic TFR is still an alkaline detergent — ours draws its cleaning power from surfactants and a small silicate builder content rather than caustic soda, and its surfactants are readily biodegradable and compliant with EU detergent regulations. But anyone handling the neat concentrate should still wear gloves and eye protection, exactly as the safety data sheet specifies. So which should your fleet use?
For routine, scheduled fleet washing — vehicles cleaned weekly or fortnightly — non-caustic is the right default. The soiling never gets heavy enough to need caustic power, and the surface protection compounds in your favour every single wash. More TFR damage is done by wrong dilution than by wrong product. Too strong wastes money and increases surface risk; too weak leaves film behind and gets the product unfairly blamed. There's no single correct ratio: the right mix depends on how heavily soiled the vehicle is, how long since its last wash, your water hardness, and whether you're applying by pressure washer, foam lance or brush. That's exactly why concentrated TFR is sold as a concentrate — you tune the strength to the job. Start weaker than you think you need on a regularly washed vehicle, step up only if film remains after rinsing, and keep a written note of the ratio that works for your fleet so every operative mixes the same wash. What it costs per vehicle
Buying concentrate in trade sizes is dramatically cheaper than it looks, because the drum price isn't the working price — the dilution is. To illustrate with deliberately conservative maths: a 20L drum of our standard non-caustic TFR is £24.99, and even at a modest 1:10 working mix that's 220 litres of ready-to-use wash solution from one drum; run a lighter maintenance-wash dilution and it stretches much further.
